The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Have you ever heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?

The easiest is to compare it to an island of trash, mainly plastic, that is as big as twice the United States; only its just beneath the surface of the water, silently growing.

Do you know how long it takes for a simple plastic grocery shopping bag to decompose into nature?
20 to 1000 years…

how long till gone

Every year 380 billion plastic bags are made, requiring the equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil per year. The biggest problem is that plastic bags, plastic bottles and other plastic materials don’t decompose, they basically stay with us, in the environment, forever.

Our friends at I Dive Blue have also recently posted about the irreparable damage of ocean plastics. To learn more, check out their insightful article here.

Plastic paradise is an extraordinary documentary that shows you the truth of what your single use plastic coffee cup in the morning is doing ti the planet and the species that call midway home. It also shows how we are all in the mids of a giant uncontrolled experiment, because plastic digested by the species we eat, affect our personal health. Without your permission, you’re being polluted, is that ok with you? Click on the image to watch the movie.

A Dutch environmentalist has been doing some interesting research to clean plastic waste from the oceans. He’s just successfully proven that the ocean is able to clean itself. Plus it will only cost 6$ per kilo and the plastic could be turned into oil. Which we clearly have a market for. We at GiliTA have decided to collaborate with him and support his cause. For every reservation, 1$ will go to The Ocean Cleanup.
