The Secret Gilis
The South Gilis, these islands – Gili in the indigenous Sasak language means Island – are located of the Batugendang peninsula, also known as the Sekotong area. They are not as famous as Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air. These are actually 16 small islands around the peninsula and only three of them are inhabited by local people (approximatively 2.200 persons): Gili Gede, Gili Asahan and Gili Layar. The Sekotong region is an unspoiled part of Lombok in contrast to Sengigi or Gili Meno, Air and Trawangan.
Gili Gede (translates to big Island), West Nusa Tenggara is located on the south western tip of Lombok in Sekotong, Its southern most tip approximately 550 meters off the port of Tembowong at the Lombok coast. It is the largest of the Sekotong Islands. GIli Gede, the best know of the ‘secret Gili’s’ the cluster of small islands in this region.
